Founded over 52 years ago, The Toronto Community Hostel (TCH) provides services to newcomers to Canada. These services include; 24/7 transitional housing in a group setting, arranging living spaces, funding and courses and skills to better participate in Canadian society. 

TCH is looking for someone that understands the importance of the shelter program to join the team as the Manager. The role is responsible for establishing regular workplace routines, standards and acceptable performance benchmarks for staff. The role reports to the Executive Director.

The ideal candidate has several years of experience working in community and outreach settings and genuinely enjoys this work and wants to help people.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure operational excellence and create procedures for program activities.
  • Efficient running of the shelter program, which includes 5 direct reports. 
  • Communicate with internal and external stakeholders when needed.
  • Ability to multi-task and handle a variety of tasks.
  • Continuously create an atmosphere that is welcoming and productive. 
  • Work on projects independently from conception to completion as well as handle confidential matters with diplomacy and discretion.
  • Work with TCH clients to get them settled in the program and provide information on the support services available to them.
  • Arrange support services which may include funding, living spaces for them and their families and courses to improve their English and other skills.
  • Provide regular updates to TCH clients and families about any changes to programs and services.
  • Work with the Executive Director to allocate the operating budget on a quarterly basis, identify fiscal pressures and develop options to mitigate costs within budget limits.
  • Stand in for the absence of the TCH Executive Director. When acting for the TCH Executive Director, you will oversee staff and meet regularly with clients to prepare for and address any current or future needs and issues as they arise.
  • Provide on-call coverage 2 evenings or for a weekend every other month. This may occasionally require attendance on site.
  • Ability to resolve residential and/or inter-personal disputes among hostel residents.


Qualifications: 

  • Minimum of 2-3 years of relevant work experience working in a similar environment.
  • Graduate of a relevant post-secondary program: in social service work or have equivalent work experience.
  • In-depth knowledge gained through professional or personal experience of a community/residential system.
  • Experience working in a shelter and with refugees/newcomers is an asset.
  • Ability to problem solve and resolve issues with individuals, client groups and management based on your knowledge and experience working in a community-based setting.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to ensure information and messages are clearly articulated and understood by staff, clients, board and stakeholders. 
  • Ability to keep management informed of issues and outcomes of conflict resolution actions.
  • Experience working with budgets and ability to identify potential/future pressures that impact the budget and make recommendations when necessary.
  • Excellent project and time management skills as well as strong record keeping skills.
  • Completion of First Aid and CPR and ability to speak a second language is an asset.
