Senior Fisheries Biologist

Founded in 1996, ENKON Environmental Limited has been a leader guiding our clients through the various federal, provincial, and local government approval processes in a cost-effective, timely, and sustainable manner. We specialize in assisting companies through the BC and Canadian environmental assessment approval processes (BCEAA and CEAA), and the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations; Mountain Resorts Branch approval process.  We also provide general regulatory permitting and environmental assessment and consulting services through regional and municipal government approval processes. ENKON continues to provide environmental consulting services to a wide range of clients, many of which have developed long term relationships of over 27 years with ENKON.

ENKON has an immediate opening for a Senior Fisheries Biologist to join their expanding team in the Surrey office to respond to growth and new opportunities.  The role will report directly to the President.

The ideal candidate will have a university degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Geography, Environmental Restoration, Forestry, or related degree with a technical environmental diploma relevant to watershed management.  In addition, be an effective communicator with demonstrated experience in the field of aquatic biology and watershed management with a focus on aquatic and riparian ecosystem management. 

 

About the Role:

You will work independently and as part of multidisciplinary project teams on a variety of projects for both industry and government clientele. The majority of your work will be in the lower mainland region.

You will provide a demonstrated understanding of natural watershed and stream channel processes and be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities and project requirements.  You will be a solutions-oriented individual providing subject matter expertise to multi-disciplinary projects in a leadership role and demonstrated experience advancing environmental design solutions to achieve project objectives. 

The work will involve environmental assessments, watercourse classification, fish habitat evaluation, preparation of environmental impact assessments, compensation/offsetting and restoration plans, development of monitoring programs; regulatory permitting, and construction phase monitoring.  Duties will include the development of technical work plans and cost proposals, project management, and coordinate staffing.

As a Senior Biologist you will be responsible for the mentorship, coaching, and leadership with junior and intermediate staff.  The successful applicant will have established working relationships within industry and regulatory bodies and will be expected to develop and maintain excellent working relationships with clients and regulatory authorities through the continued demonstration of technical proficiency, professionalism, and integrity.

Responsibilities 

Req Field visits using established protocols as necessary to complete assessments of the natural environment. May include terrestrial, wetland and aquatic flora, fauna, species at risk and habitats, on various scales and sizes;

  • Reporting on a variety of topics pertaining to the natural environment and potential impacts of development for submission to regulatory agencies, including making recommendations for best practice and industry standard mitigation measures;
  • Secure environmental regulatory approvals (DFO, FLNRO) and authorizations to facilitate infrastructure and land development projects;
  • Analyze, evaluate and interpret data while providing results within the scope and objective(s) of the specific project;
  • Coordinate and complete environmental assessments (water quality, wetlands, vegetation, habitat, wildlife, aquatic);
  • Lead project and coordinate projects with our environmental team
  • Prepare and review technical reports, field work plans and associated documents from peers and junior staff;
  • Act as a mentor to junior and intermediate staff, including on-site training and technical resource provisions;
  • Provide technical and professional resources on issues related to natural sciences;
  • Liaise with clients and regulatory agencies;
  • Develop new business opportunities and enhance client relationships in both the public and private sectors;
  • Other duties as assigned/required.

 

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • An undergraduate science degree related to Watershed Management, Aquatic Biology, Ecology, or Environmental Sciences and 10 plus years of applicable work experience.
  • Registered as R.P.Bio.
  • The position requires registration, or eligibility for registration, with the BC Institute of Agrologists.
  • Project management experience in the delivery of environmental assessment and environmental approval processes.
  • Strong knowledge and experience in the application of relevant Provincial and Federal environmental and natural resource legislation, policies, and professional standards.
  • Strong knowledge and experience with local lower mainland region municipal government bylaws and policies pertinent to land development and environmental protection.
  • Demonstrated experience in watercourse assessment and classification, wetland evaluation, and riparian area assessments.
  • Demonstrated experience as a primary Qualified Environmental Professional in relation to the Riparian Areas Protection Regulation (RAPR).
  • Demonstrated experience in the preparation and submission of successful Water Sustainability Act change approvals.
  • Demonstrated ability to advance aquatic impact mitigation and compensation/offsetting designs, and development of restoration and enhancement plans.
  • Demonstrate excellent oral presentation skills with clear, concise written communication skills (in English).
  • Ability to provide quality assurance/quality control reviews to junior and intermediate staff.
  • Comfortable and willing to work in challenging terrain, adverse weather conditions, and active construction sites.
  • Must have a driver’s license and vehicle for transport to field locations.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in urban watershed management and low impact design.
  • Certification in electro-fishing.
  • Experience in hydrometric monitoring and modeling.
  • Direct experience with GPS field data collection (Trimble platforms) and GIS mapping and analysis (ESRI software)
  • ISA Certified Arborist designation or hazard tree assessment certification (TRAQ) will be considered an asset.
